This technical note describes how to deploy and manage EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 with an existing MCS version 2.2 or 3.0 installation.

Overview

Follow the steps in this technical note to deploy and manage EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 with your existing MCS installation version 2.2 or 3.0. MCS does not ship with EXTRA! X-treme 9.0, but you can deploy EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 with an existing MCS installation.

Note: Technical support for MCS is provided for existing MCS installations only. If you do not have an existing MCS installation and you require central management of terminal emulation clients, contact your Attachmate representative, http://www.attachmate.com/Worldwide/.

Reference Document

This technical note covers the basic steps required to add EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 to an existing MCS installation for deployment. Detailed instructions and screenshots on this topic are provided in the "Preparing to Deploy Attachmate EXTRA! X-treme—A System Administrator's Guide," which is available on the Attachmate Technical Support web site at the link below. The guide is referenced throughout this technical note; we recommend that you download it so that you can refer to it when needed:

The information in "Preparing to Deploy Attachmate EXTRA! X-treme" (hereafter referred to as the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file) applies to EXTRA! version 8.0 or higher.

Deployment Steps

There are four basic steps to follow to install and prepare EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 on the MCS Server for deployment to your users:

1. Install EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 to Your Workstation or MCS Server

Before you can deploy EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 to your MCS server, you must install EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 with the administrator utilities to your workstation or to the MCS server.

Reference: In the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file, see "Phase I, Preparation" on page 1 (12 of 215 in Adobe Acrobat Reader) for screenshots and more information.

  1. On your administrator workstation or MCS Server, run the Setup program or insert the product CD for EXTRA! X-treme 9.0.
  2. Select the Language in which you would like the installation to be performed.
  3. Enter the access code for the Administrator’s Edition.

Note: Your installation access code is displayed on the file download page or from the following link (login required):

http://www.attachmate.com/ts-restricted/XtremeAccessCodes.aspx

  1. Follow the prompts to complete the EXTRA! installation to your workstation.

At this point, EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 and the administrative tools are installed to your administrative machine or MCS Server.

2. Run Distribution Publisher to Upload EXTRA! 9.0 to the MCS Server

Reference: In the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file, see "Configuring Distributions" on page 49 (60 of 215) for screenshots and more information.

  1. To launch Distribution Publisher, click Start > Attachmate EXTRA! X-treme > Distribution Publisher.

You will be prompted for your MCS Server URL and a user name and password. The user name you enter must have permission, under MCS Security (such as System or another user with Administrative privileges), to manage distributions. Once authenticated, Distribution Publisher opens.

  1. To upload a distribution (compressed MSI, transform file (MST), patch (MSP), or executable), click Browse and go to the directory in which your files are located, and select the file.

This is where the new EXTRA! 9.0 MSI file called ATMEE90.MSI will be selected.

  1. Click Add. Repeat this as many times as necessary to add all of your files. More than one file (like MST files) can be highlighted at one time, but only one MSI file can be uploaded at a time.

At this time, the file to be added will be moved to the Files to Publish to MCS box.

  1. Once you have finished adding your files, click Publish.

By default, the files will upload to a directory created with the same name as your customized MSI. For example if the MSI file is named ATMEE90.MSI the files will be uploaded to a directory called ATMEE90. Any MST files selected are also uploaded to the same directory.

If you select an MST file(s) without an MSI, you will be prompted for the package with which to include that MST.

Your packages have now been uploaded to the MCS server for deployment.

3. Create a New Distribution for EXTRA! 9.0 on the MCS Server

Reference: See "Configuring Packages" on page 52 (63 of 215) in the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file for screenshots and more information.

  1. Start MCS, and then login as System or another user with Administrative privileges to MCS Console.
  2. In the MCS left pane, click Products > EXTRA! X-treme > Distribution Manager.

Notice the packages that you uploaded for previous versions of EXTRA! are listed, such as EXTRA! X-treme 8.0.

  1. To create a new distribution, click New Distribution at the top of this page.

You will be prompted for the type of distribution this is, such as a Product installation, patch or executable.

  1. Select New Product Installation, and then click Next.

At this screen, you should see the MSI file you uploaded in the previous steps, for example, ATMEE90.MSI. When you select that file, any transforms associated with it will display.

  1. Select the Transform you would like to use for this distribution (if any) and then click Next.
  2. Complete the fields on this screen as follows:

Product ID of the Installation File: Following are the product codes for the various products associated with EXTRA! X-treme 9.0:

    Product
    ID
    EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 Base Pack
    FBA5A23D-2683-43C4-99FC-070B61EE730F
    EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 Connections Pack
    929537F6-F85F-4E85-91AB-A1693A2F9B3F
    EXTRA! X-treme 9.0 Options Pack
    E155E492-E8FB-44F0-BB4C-3493C026B475

Version Number: If you would like to version your distribution, you may enter a version number here; this is not a required field. This value can contain up to two sets of numeric characters, separated by a single decimal (for example, 2006.44). It cannot contain alphabetic characters.

Access Code: Type the access code for the installation as it is displayed on the File Information and Download page, above the Download Now link. Verify whether an access code is included in a transform file, it does not need to be entered here if it is in the MST file. If you do not enter a required access code when creating a distribution, the assigned user will be prompted to provide it before installation can proceed.

Click the Advanced Button to Specify Additional Command-Line Parameters: The most common switch added to the command line is /qb to set the user interface to basic, not allowing the user to make changes to the installation, but notifying them when it is complete.

  1. Click Next, and complete the information on this page.

Enter a name for this Distribution Below: Enter a name to help you as the administrator know what this distribution contains, and for whose use it is intended.

Description: Type a short description of the distribution. Although you can use an unlimited number of characters for the description, you will likely want to keep it brief—the information from the description appears on the Products & Updates page, where the width of the columns automatically adjust according to the length of the text provided.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Confirm your setting, and then click Back if changes are required; otherwise click Finish.

Your new distribution should now show on the Distributions page.

4. Assign Users to the New Distribution of EXTRA! 9.0

Reference: See "Assigning Users" on page 59 (70 of 215) in the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file for screenshots and more information.

Assuming that your users have already been set up on MCS, you must now assign users.

  1. With the distribution selected, click Assign Users.
  2. Click Add. This does not show users by default; it only shows groups.
  3. Select the Show Users check box, and then select the individual users to which you would like to deploy this distribution.
  4. Once users and/or groups have been selected, click OK to continue.
  5. Confirm the users listed and click OK to continue, or Add to add more users.

You will now see your users Assigned status for that distribution set to Yes. The distribution is now ready for the users.

Install EXTRA! 9.0 on the Workstation

Reference: See "Users Accessing MCS Deployments" on page 61 (72 of 215) in the CentralManagementWalkthrough.pdf file for screenshots and more information.

  1. From the user’s machine, launch a web browser and connect to the following URL to access the MCS Distribution page.
http://<servername>:<port>/distribute

At this time, all of the distributions assigned to this user will be available. The version number (if you entered one) and installation status will be displayed.

  1. In the Action column, the user selects Install. A Download dialog box opens that confirms the download and displays the size of the file about to be downloaded.
  2. The user clicks Yes to begin the file download.

The installation begins as if the user had installed using the Setup program.
