Reflection for Secure IT Windows Client version 6.0
Summary
This technical note describes how to upgrade an administrative installation of Reflection for Secure IT Windows Client 6.0 to version 6.1.
Note: Reflection for Secure IT version 7.0 is available beginning in February 2008. For a list of new features in 7.0, see Technical Note 2281.
Before You Create a Reflection Administrative Installation
Before upgrading to Reflection for Secure IT Windows Client 6.1, note the following:
- You must create a new network installation point for Reflection for Secure IT 6.1. Do not install Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 to the same administrative installation point used for an earlier Reflection for Secure IT 6.0 administrative installation.
- If you customized the deployment of the earlier installation and wish to retain these customizations, you must customize the 6.1 administrative installation in the same manner. Otherwise, you will lose the added files when 6.1 is deployed.
- If you want to deploy a customized installation of Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 or higher, use the Reflection Customization Manager to create the Administrative installation point.
Known Issues and Recommendations
This section describes known issues and recommendations associated with customizations to the Reflection
- Adding FilesIt is possible to add additional files (such as settings files, configuration files, client files, text files, or document files) to the installation using the Add Files feature in Reflection Customization Manager; however, you will lose the additional files when you upgrade Reflection to a later version. If you want the file to remain after upgrading or uninstalling the product, select the "Make this file permanent" check box in the Add File to Installation dialog box.
Another way to add files to the installation is by creating a companion package. By using a companion package, you can retain additional files when you upgrade or uninstall Reflection. For more information, see the section titled, "Make Additional Files Available for Your Users with Companion Packages," in the Preparing to Deploy Reflection Guide (PDF file): http://www.attachmate.com/docs/reflection/14.0/deploy.pdf.
- New System-wide Configuration File (ssh_config) Folder LocationThe folder location used for the system-wide configuration file (ssh_config) has changed in version 6.1. If you deployed this file in version 6.0, you will need to deploy the file again with version 6.1 to the new folder location, which is Shared Application Data\Attachmate\Reflection (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data). The previous location was Shared Application Data\Reflection.
Creating a Reflection for Secure IT Windows Client 6.1 Administrative Installation
You must create a new network installation point for Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 and re-customize to get the same customizations made in an earlier installation. For detailed instructions about this process, see the Preparing to Deploy Reflection Guide (PDF file): http://www.attachmate.com/docs/reflection/14.0/deploy.pdf.
Overview of the steps involved to prepare your Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 administrative installation:
- Perform a Workstation Install of Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 on your administrator workstation.
- Install the Reflection Administrator's Toolkit (which includes the Reflection Customization Manager).
- Use the Reflection Customization Manager to put the administrative installation on a file server.
- Use the Reflection Customization Manager to customize the Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 administrative installation. You must re-customize to get the same customizations made in an earlier installation.
Note: If you do not want to customize the Reflection installation or to make additional files available to your users, installing and deploying Reflection to your users is a simple two-step process. For more information, see the section titled "Simple Reflection Deployment" in Technical Note 1686.
Upgrading the Workstations to Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 from an Administrative installation
Before upgrading workstations to Reflection for Secure IT 6.1, note the following:
- You cannot install Reflection for Secure IT 6.1 and retain version 6.0 of Reflection. The Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) will detect and automatically upgrade the earlier version (listed in the Applies To section above) to 6.1. The earlier version will be removed by the upgrade, even if it is located in a different location.
After the administrative installation point has been created, the workstations can now be upgraded from the earlier version to Reflection for Secure IT 6.1. Use standard methods for installing from an administrative installation point such as creating a shortcut or running Setup.exe from the administrative installation point.
For more information about creating a shortcut to deploy Reflection using Reflection Deployment Manager, see the section titled "Create a Deployment Shortcut" in the Preparing to Deploy Reflection Guide (PDF file): http://www.attachmate.com/docs/reflection/14.0/deploy.pdf.
