After installing Reflection NFS, if your workstation seems slower when accessing network resources (such as hosts or files) you may need to change the Windows Network Provider Order. This technical note describes how the Windows Network Provider Order works and how to modify the order.
When you initiate access to a network resource (hosts or files, for instance), the Windows operating system passes the access request to the first network provider in the Windows Network Provider Order list. The first network provider attempts to access the resource. If the attempt is unsuccessful, the request for access is passed to the next provider in the list. Network access performance can be affected by the order in which network providers are listed.
When Reflection NFS Client is installed, NFS is added to the top of the Network Provider Order list. If other network protocols are also installed on your workstation, such as Windows or Novel networking, you may need to reorganize the order of the provider list for maximum network access speed.
There is no specific order of network providers that works in all situations. The order that works best in your environment is determined by several variables, such as host response time and network speed.
To obtain the best results, try the network providers in a few different orders to see if there is a noticeable difference in access speed. Then, set the order accordingly.
Follow the steps below to change the Network Provider Order.
In Windows XP, click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
Note: The Print Provider order has no impact on network access performance.
