Obtaining Reflection NFS Logs

Summary

When troubleshooting Reflection NFS Client issues, it may be useful to obtain NFS log files. When logging is enabled in NFS, the NFS Client logs data to the Windows Event Viewer. These logs can be used for your own troubleshooting or technical support may request logs during a service request call. This technical note explains how to capture and view event logs, and how to send the logs to technical support.

Enable NFS Logging

The steps to enable NFS logging vary depending on the for the version of Reflection NFS you are using.

Version 11.0 or Higher

To enable NFS logging in versions 11.0 or higher, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click My Network Places and click About Reflection NFS. Click OK.
  2. Click View > Settings.
  3. On the NFS Other tab of the Reflection NFS Client Properties window, select the Enable logging check box. Click OK.
  4. Close the Reflection NFS Utility.
  5. Shut down and restart the workstation.

Version 10.x

To enable NFS logging in version 10.x, you must edit the Windows Registry.

Warning: Proceed with extreme caution when editing the Windows Registry. It is critical to back up the Registry before you proceed. For full details and warnings regarding editing the Windows Registry, see Microsoft Article 256986:

  1. Click Start > Run. In the Open field, enter regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to My Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WRQReflection\NFS.
  3. In the right pane, right-click NFSEnablelogging and click Modify.
  4. Change the Value data to 01, and then click OK. (The default setting is 00.)
  5. Close the Windows Registry Editor.
  6. Shut down and restart the workstation.

Clear the Microsoft Event Viewer

Before duplicating the problem, follow the steps below to clear the Microsoft Event Viewer Application and System logs.

  1. To start the Microsoft Event Viewer, click Start > Run. In the Open field, enter eventvwr.msc, and then click OK.

Note: The Event Viewer can also be started from Window's Administrative Tools menu.

  1. In the left pane, right-click Application Log, and click Clear All Events. You will be prompted to save your existing log file. Click Yes to save the log file and No to continue without saving.
  2. In the left pane, right-click System Log, and click Clear All Events. You will be prompted to save your existing log file. Click Yes to save the log file and No to continue without saving.
  3. Shut down and restart the workstation.

Capture and View the Logs

Once the workstation has been restarted, duplicate the NFS issue and then follow the steps below to view the data in the Microsoft Event Viewer.

Viewing the Data

Follow these steps to view the logged data.

  1. To start the Microsoft Event Viewer, click Start > Run, in the Open field, enter eventvwr.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Select the Application Log or System Log. When viewing the Application Log, the Reflection NFS data is listed under "WRQ NFS Client." When viewing the System Log, the Reflection NFS data is listed under "ReflectionNFSRDR."

To view details, double-click an event. Use the up and down arrows to move through the log.

Save the Log Data

Follow these steps to save the log data in the Microsoft Event Viewer.

Note: Save the files with the default *.evt extension. If you save the files using a different extension, you will be unable to reopen the logs in the Windows Event Viewer.

  1. In the left pane, right-click Application Log and click Save Log File As.
  2. In the left pane, right-click System Log and click Save Log File As.

Disable NFS Logging

Once you have reproduced the issue and captured log information, follow the steps below to disable NFS logging.

Note: Leaving NFS logging enabled may negatively impact workstation speed.

Version 11.0 or Higher

To disable NFS logging in versions 11.0 or higher.

  1. Right-click My Network Places and click About Reflection NFS. Click OK.
  2. Click View > Settings.
  3. On the NFS Other tab of the Reflection NFS Client Properties window, clear the Enable logging check box. Click OK.
  4. Close the Reflection NFS Utility.
  5. Shut down and restart the workstation.

Version 10.x

To disable NFS Logging, you must edit the Windows Registry.

  1. Click Start > Run. In the Open field, enter regedit, and then click OK.

  3. In the right pane, right-click NFSEnablelogging and click Modify.
  4. Change the Value data to 00, and then click OK.
  5. Close the Windows Registry Editor.
  6. Shut down and restart the workstation.

Upload the Log Files to Technical Support

After obtaining the log files requested by technical support, send the files to Attachmate and include your service request number.

If the file(s) is less than 3 MB, you can e-mail the file to technical support. Send the files as attachments, and in the body of the e-mail include:

  • a description of the file
  • the name of the technical support engineer you are working with
  • your service request number (if known)

If the file(s) is more than 3 MB, upload it using http://upload.attachmate.com/.
