Upgrading from Reflection NFS Client version 9.x to versions 10.0 through 12.x requires a pre-upgrade patch. If you are upgrading the NFS Client from an administrative installation point, you must manually install the pre-upgrade patch before upgrading to version 10.0 - 12.x of NFS Client. If you are installing the NFS Client to your workstation directly from the product CD, this patch is automatically installed.
Warning: If you perform an upgrade to 10.0 12.x on a computer running version 9.x without first installing the pre-upgrade patch, the installation will appear successful, but the NFS Client will not work. If this happens, uninstall the NFS Client, and then re-install version 10.0 12.x.
Applying this patch makes minor changes to the NFS installation and updates the NFS Client version number to 9.0.4. This is expected behavior even if you are applying a later 9.x patch. This patch is not required if you are upgrading from a version of NFS Client other than 9.x.
For information about the versions of Reflection NFS Client that run on each version of the Windows operating system, see Technical Note 1866.
For information about upgrading to version 13.0 or higher of Reflection NFS Client, see Technical Note 1846.
If you are installing the NFS Client from an administrative installation point, or if you are using Active Directory or SMS to deploy it, the patch program does not run automatically. When performing this type of installation, the file, Nfs.msi, initiates the installation. This file is unable to install the pre-upgrade patch, which is installed by the file, Install.exe.
When performing an administrative installation, choose one of the following options:
Note: If you choose to uninstall version 9.x before installing version 10.0 12.x, this process may reboot the workstation three times (after uninstalling version 9.x, upgrading Microsoft Windows Installer to version 2.0, and then after installing version 10.0 12.x). If you choose to manually apply the pre-upgrade patch, the workstation may be re-booted twice (after upgrading Microsoft Windows Installer to version 2.0 and then installing version 10.0 12.x).
To manually install the pre-upgrade patch, follow the steps below.
For Windows XP/2000/NT: Nfsupgradepatch_nt.exe
For Windows 98: Nfsupgradepatch_9x.exe
Note: If you are handling the NFS installation for many users, you can copy the patch to a centrally available location and make it available for your user's to run.
You are now ready to upgrade to version 10.0 12.x. When upgrading, specify the same folder as your current installation and install version 10.0 12.x over your installed (and patched) 9.x product. Your existing settings will be preserved.
If you are upgrading the NFS Client to version 10.0 12.x on your workstation directly from the product CD, the patch is applied automatically. (The update is handled by the file Install.exe, the Reflection installation program.) Simply specify the same folder as your current installation and install version 10.0 12.x over your previously installed product. Your existing settings will be preserved.
Note: This pre-upgrade patch requires Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) version 2.0. The Windows 98 and Windows NT operating systems do not include MSI by default; however, MSI is installed by many programs, so it may be present on these systems. During installation, if MSI 2.0 is not detected on your machine, you will be prompted to install the MSI service. After installing the service, you must restart Windows and restart the Reflection installation.
For more details about MSI 2.0, see Technical Note 1565.
